The Historic Reissue series has gone through changes every year since, each year becoming more and more accurate to the reproduction of the originals. Although models were produced prior to 1993 such as the Heritage 80 Les Paul or the 1979 Les Paul KM, the Historic Reissue guitar took the highly specific details of the 1958-1960 Les Paul to a whole new level of accuracy! The Historic Reissue collection was first introduced in 1993, and included Les Pauls with the chunky neck profiles of the 1950s or slimmer 1960s profiles, period correct hardware, PAF-style humbucking pickups, and high quality flame maple tops. While a designated section of the company dubbed a “Custom Shop” wasn’t started until 1986, Gibson was always willing to work with artists from the 1920s through the the 1950s to create a special one-off request, such as the Nick Lucas model, Roy Smeck Stage Deluxe, or technically the Les Paul – a signature instrument for none other than Les Paul! Customer requests were rare but not unheard of – such as the famed “Blackburst” 1958 Les Paul finished in black as opposed to the standard Sunburst.ĭuring the restructuring of the company in the late 1980’s, Gibson decided to separate its small but budding Custom Shop to be a separate division, free to build guitars to artists and customers orders, and also beginning to create Artist Signature runs! What the Gibson Custom Shop became most known for was, and still is their commitment to recreating the Golden Era electric guitars of the late 1950s through the early ‘60s – the Historic Reissue Les Paul. The Gibson Custom Shop has as rich and storied history as Gibson does as a whole.
